Your Opportunity:
We are looking for a detail-oriented, organized Health Information Management Professional I for our Chinook Regional Hospital location. This role is responsible for coding and abstracting data from patient healthcare records including inpatient, emergency department, day surgery and some urgent care within AHS’ South Zone. The successful individual requires excellent skills in reviewing patient records and assigning diagnoses and procedure/intervention codes according to national and provincial standards. You are experienced in using a computerized abstracting system, computerized encoder, and electronic Folio reference. Additionally, you are resourceful and able to find information needed to code patient charts, and are aware of the importance of confidentiality, privacy laws, and handling vital information. Coding specialists work with physicians and other allied health professionals to validate and improve chart documentation. You are vital in maintaining the integrity of patients’ records including coding specific or new diagnoses, so that patients receive the most efficient, quality healthcare along their health journey. The data you manage is significant in providing consistent, accurate and timely data that is used for planning initiatives by caregivers and the patients’ healthcare team. A constant learner, you are willing to attend ongoing workshops on the most up-to-date technology, coding charts, disease processes, and information related to privacy legislation including the Health Information Act, and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. As a Health Information Management Professional I, you will be responsible for coding and abstracting data from clinical records, release of information and/or data quality assurance. In accordance with AHS procedures and the Health Information Act, you will gather, retrieve, collate, code, design, analyze, interpret clinical and demographic data and perform statistical reporting and regular data quality reviews for patient records.

Completion of diploma from an accredited Health Information Management Professional (HIMP) program.
Active or eligible for registration with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA). Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience with current Canadian Coding standards and DAD/NACRS for the collection of diagnoses, interventions and specific data elements. Proficiency with personal computer (Windows, MS Office). The AHS standard provincial coding proficiency test will be administered during the interview process. Excellent English language skills in reading, writing and oral communications is required. This position requires the individual to have skills in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet established deadlines. Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum of 6 months coding and abstracting experience. Experience with electronic health records. Other key competencies for this role include: evidence of commitment to professional and self-development along with continued education and learning in the field of Health Information Management. Experience with related legislation regarding access, privacy and disclosure of patient information.
