Your Opportunity:

The Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) works in collaboration and partnership across Alberta Health Services and with external partners towards health equity for Indigenous peoples and communities. The IWC is the mechanism through which AHS plans to achieve on-going provincial improvement in Indigenous health, patient outcomes and experience, health improvement and sustainability of Alberta’s health system. The Indigenous Wellness Coordinator will provide counseling, support, education and facilitation of traditional Indigenous healing services to patients, families and health professionals under the guidance of the Manager of Edmonton & Central Zone, Indigenous Wellness Core. Recognizing Alberta Health Services provides health care services to 258,640 Indigenous people living in Alberta, in addition, to Indigenous people from Canada’s North, Northern Saskatchewan and Northern British Columbia, the Indigenous Cultural Helper provides a spirit of hospitality, spiritual and cultural support to diverse Indigenous people seeking tertiary health care services. All Non-Union/Exempt positions are being reviewed for possible inclusion in the AUPE General Support Services bargaining unit. Description:

This position is responsible and accountable for: Advocating and supporting Indigenous clients and families across the continuum of care—within health care facilities and within the community setting. Promoting awareness of and assisting Indigenous clients, families, agencies, and communities in accessing Alberta Health Services programs and services. Promoting awareness and assisting in linking Indigenous clients, families, and communities to non-AHS programs i.e., FCSS, Children’s Services, local social service agencies. Participating in the provision of health promotion and disease/injury prevention programs through partnerships which focus on self-reliance and self-determination. Assisting AHS staff and physicians in obtaining information to better understand the client and family health concerns, social support network, and barriers to access to health care. Providing consultation and assistance to the health care team regarding culturally appropriate service provision. Participating in the provision of cultural awareness education for AHS staff. Developing culturally appropriate educational programs and materials for Indigenous clients, families, and communities. Facilitating the development of respectful working partnerships between Alberta Health Services programs & services and Indigenous communities, organizations, and agencies.

Required Qualifications:

Some post-secondary education. If part of a registered profession—registration in good standing with applicable governing body essential. 5 years work experience with Indigenous people.

Knowledge of the diversity of Indigenous cultural and political structures. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment. Demonstrated ability and comfort with coaching and teaching individuals and groups. Effective oral and written communication skills. Evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to solve routine and standard problems. Evidence of initiative, flexibility and strong commitment. Demonstrated punctuality, adaptability, discretion and confidentiality. Travel is required in their day to day work. Manager may assign Coordinator as a representative to committee work. Are responsible for developing and maintaining respectful professional working relationships within AHS and with Indigenous clients, families, and communities.


Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in humanities and/or social sciences. Ability to speak an Indigenous language is considered an asset. College certificate/diploma in related health care discipline, such as Community Health Representative, Social Work, and Nursing (If part of a registered profession—registration in good standing with applicable governing body). Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
