About the Job:
An exciting opportunity exists for Child & Youth Activity Workers at Koomseh Second Stage Housing, a program of Atira Women's Resource Society. We offer a challenging and rewarding work environment for women passionate about the work of ending violence against women and children. Understanding the dynamics of violence against women and children within the context of intersectional feminism and being able to apply this understanding in your day-to-day practice is mandatory.

Qualifications:
This position is a temporary summer student position, funded by the Minister of Employment and Social
Development and certain conditions must be met:
  • The successful candidate must be between the age of 15 and 30.
  • The successful applicant must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and, is legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.
  • International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Experience working with children and youth who have/are experiencing and or have witnessed violence and abuse is a definite asset. Must have a well-developed analysis of the ongoing effects of colonization and the resulting impact on First Nations, Métis and Inuk women; must understand and be at ease working within a harm-reduction environment.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Plan, facilitate and assess developmentally appropriate activities and experiences that promote the well-being of children/youth and that reflect the diverse needs of children/youth
  • Provides one-to-one and group support to children/youth
  • Organizes and facilitates recreational activities such as communal meals, cultural celebrations, movies, craft activities, outdoor activities, etc., for children/youth
  • Providing group and individual childcare as required to mothers who may have court appearances, appointments with lawyers, counselors or doctors, etc.
  • Keeps accurate records, files, log notes & statistical information as per Atira’s practice/policy;
  • Assists families moving in and moving out
  • Performs light housekeeping duties

Education:
Students pursuing an education in Early Childhood Education, Family Support Services, and Community Support Worker programs like those offered at the Justice Institute, Douglas College or the Native Education College is considered an asset.
Additional Requisites/Assets:
  • A valid First Aid Certificate is required
  • Covid-19 and annual flu vaccinations are required, unless with an exemption
  • All positions are subject to a Criminal Records Review (Submitted by Atira)
